Many rivers in Japan have had their banks encased in concrete. Ostensibly, it's to limit erosion and to help control flooding. More often, it's a good project for construction companies. Rob read a statistic that said that last year, Japanese construction firms poured more concrete than all US companies combined (including highway projects). This small river, not far from Rob's apartment, is completely covered over in places.
