Here's the short summary of the history behind the 400-year old Matsue Castle. Lafcadio Hearn was one of the first westerners to settle in Japan, become very familar with its customs and history, and write about Japan for western audiences. Born in Greece, he worked in the US for a Cincinnati newspaper as well as for Harper's magazine. He lived for a while in Matsue and wrote extensively about the area. Later in the day, we visited the Hearn museum and walked past the house that he used to live in.
